Children's Peace Theater, México
Bacalar, Quintana Roo

Children’s Peace Theater, Mexico
Bacalar, Quintana Roo
4:00 pm kids started to arrive to the auditorium, excited and dressed up with no logos. We had to dance a little bit, to the rhythm of the music we started shaking off stress and nervousness.  After we held our openning circle where we talked about the dress rehearsal, all of the kids showed their interest in the feedback, they identified the areas that can be better as well as their successes.  Their comments were very assertive and critical and I realized how much they have learned in these two weeks.  Where we worked together and we learned making theater to practice Peace.  It is very gratifying to witness how they started to use the 3Cs (Creativity, Compassion and Courage) to solve conflict, they realized that by being creative and committed they can produce a piece of art, something as beautiful as seing a hundred parents and general audience on the verge of crying listening to the song that the kids wrote about the Bacalar Lagoon.
I’m very satisfied with the result, magic was made and through theater we passed on a clear and strong message about: the care of water, our planet and our natural surroundings.                        The conservation of the lagoon was one of the main points, therefore we organized a trip.  The fun and entertaining way in which Erick, our guide and the owner of one of the boats (pontón), gave us a tour of the lagoon, teaching all of us about the animals, showing us different bird calls and sharing lots of stories.  It was a very efficient way in which the kids felt more deeply connected to this beautiful seven colors lagoon.   As Erick said “Kids can not defend something that they don’t have access to.” After visiting and doing our meditation in the lagoon, without a doubt we learned a lot more to value, respect and take care of water.
Directing Children’s Peace Theater Mexico was a challenge, I managed to do it using my two year experience working with the organization and my thirteen year experience working as an artist, the geographic, climatic, and cultural differences made a big difference, for example in Toronto Summer only lasts two months and people love enjoying sunny days if there is an opportunity, therefore Summer can be lots of fun and even more if there is outdoor theater.  In contrast to Bacalar where everyday is an intense Summer day and for kids is more attractive and exciting to work in a big, breezy room.
The team captivated and motivated me to continue in this adventure, it was one of those things where you find yourself in the right place, amongst the right people, and the perfect moment for Children’s Peace Theater Mexico to happen.  A very diverse, rich in talent and full of humanity team, with their energy always up and open to learning and sharing their knowledge.  For the great majority of them it was the first time working with kids.  At the beginning I felt they were a bit scared and nervous but the first day of the camp they relaxed and they just let the kid they all have inside out in order to communicate with the campers.
Everything flowed well, thanks to the production team and coordinators, Ivan, Cornelio and Areli we were able to maintain everything under control and the rhythm up because there was a structure and administrative support.  We are so lucky to be able to work together and make this team, we all learned and grew as human beings and as professionals in this past month.  Right now we are all missing being in the camp: playing, creating, and learning with everyone.
Thanks Children’s Peace Theater for sharing its artistic and pedagogical model, Mexico needs this, it is a powerful and effective way of creating global change starting with the local and familiar.  I feel very honoured to be part of this team.
Thanks to  Ramon Ivan Suarez Caamal, director of La Casa Internacional del Escritor (The International House of the Writer), for opening his doors and trusting me, for allowing different disciplines to come together to give birth to this first Peace Camp Mexico and that the play Agua Pasa Por Mi Casa (Water Runs Through My House) culminated with applausse, wonder and admiration towards the kids of Bacalar, Quintana Roo, Mexico.
Thanks to Abraham Illescas, Agustina Nivio, Alejandra Higuera, Citlali Zermeño, Danieal Bravo, Edel Vazquez, Leif Janovits, Neyli da Lua, Norma Sanchez, Paty Vazquez, Sebastian Labarone and Victoria Vinzon for donating their time and energy, your commitment is invaluable, thanks for facilitating the finding of talents in each one of the kids, like I said, you have helped them to remake themselves and know that a better world excists. Art be with you.

The final stretch
Surprise at 9am: Part of the set  was ready!
There is a different air, the exictment when almost everything is ready for a party.  Today is an exciting day indeed,  we are finalizing details for the play that will be presented tomorrow; nervousness, happiness, stress, rest, work.
All of us started the day as audience, observing the set, listening to Fernando’s guidence on how the play will go tomorrow. After giving them instructions on how to take care of the set, all the kids go backstage, here Fernando explains to them how they have to arrange themselves while they wait for their entrance.  Everything starts to take shape, a sense, an emotion.
Third round, now we rehearse with music and projections.
Fourth round, everything comes together, also the song that the kids wrote inspired by their visit to the lagoon the day before.
Before continuing the rehearsal we take a small break: time to run around and play.
And now we continue cleaning up all the sketches, and we run the whole play again.
At lunch time we have another surprise: we all get a delicious breakfast from The Rancho Encantado Hotel, (yummy it was so good) All of us enjoyed it.
Now full of energy, a really good meditation, Fernando prepares the kids in concentration in the stage, preparing them because there is another surprise: Dress rehearsal with the parents present!
The awaited dress rehearsal arrives, all the kids are very excited to see their parents arrive and see them as their audience, a lot of emotions running out because for a lot of them is the first time that they are part of a play.  Nervousness also is felt by the artistic guides and the Stage Managers: Paty and Norma, who coordinate each kids entrance.
The dress rehearsal starts and there is chills, some tears and lots of smiles.  What a beautiful moment, how joyful is to see the result of the work that has been done by the kids, artistic guides, youth guides and everyone that has made this project possible.
Today when I saw the end result I felt so happy to be part of this team of people, to have met them and having the courage to participate in this peace project for kids. My heart is overflowing with joy for the big day tomorrow.
Congatulations everyone for accomplishing this!

Today we all woke up before the sun came up, at 7:30 am we were all ready at La Casa Internacional del Escritor to leave to Las Cabañas Club to start our trip in la Laguna de Bacalar.  There were two boats and we split the group in two groups, 7 children and 4 guides per boat.
We started our adventure at the bird's island, where captain Erick told us how our lagoon was formed, the cenotes, where our water comes from, names of birds and their names and the noises they make.
After we toured around three cenotes: Cocalitos, Laguna Azul and Cenote de la Bruja. At the last one Erick told us a very peculiar story.  Next we went to the Pirate Channel, where there is an abandom building in the shape of a big ship and there is also a small beach where we sat and did a relaxation exercise and right after we went back to land.
We went back to La Casa Internacional del Escritor right at lunch time and took a 15 minute break.  When lunch was over Nuria and Miguel (two documentary makers from Spain) showed us a video of the life of a group of kids in Haiti that live in an orphanage.  This was really good for the kids to bring a bit of consciousness and a time of reflection after our beautiful trip to the lagoon.
After we split the group into three theater groups and we kept writing the song for the play, after we put all of the lyrics together and finished the song.  We rehearsed it many times.
Once the song was done we kept rehearsing and improving the sketches for the play, once we were done acting them out we talked about wardrobe with the children and the Gala Night business, and we said good bye for today.

Today it was making breakfast team Ale, Fer, Vicki, Sebastian and Cornelius surprised us with a double sandwich of ham, cheese, tomato and fresh lettuce. We finished breakfast and we joined immediately to camp activities.
We started the day with round body did vocal warm and guided by Fer and Vicky, we spoke to the children about how they felt the day before and camp was divided into three teams: Team 1 Vicky's hand, Team 2 Neyli and equipment 3 Patty, Agus and me.

We worked in body movements depending on the animal that they have to represent everyone, and his diction and vocal strength. It was amazing to see how their body movements were more precise and expressive as well as covering the entire stage space. They left the shame aside, and with impressive determination, completed the exercises with a maximum level.
The meditation was led by Vicky in the hall of the House International Writer, formed two lines to irrigate their own little plants of tomato. They took the plant to meditation. It is a delight to see as every day children go deeper in meditation and enjoy.
Later it was time for lunch, they sat at the table harmoniously enjoy and talk. Finishing lunch there were two groups one led by Daniela, they were putting together their props and painting all very happy and glad to see his work completed. The other group was led by Sebastian Tabachin pods painting for the children set a stop motion.
Later staged his works, each team was able to see how every performance went better.
At the end of each performance the children made constructive criticism to peers and expressed what they liked about each work, finishing the interpretations formed the farewell circle, ending as always with a bop and applause. For the courage, creativity and compassion they showed in this day hard.

Victoria.

Day 7

Upon arrival before going into the classroom all of the children watered their plants. They seem very excited about their sprouts.
Today we had new activities therefore the opening circle was shorter than usual.  The poet group, Sian Kan, who are participating in a poet gathering at La Casa Internacional del Escritor, were ready to help the kids write the lyrics for the play.
It was very interesting to see the change specially in the girls, you could hear them complaining about how poetry is so boring but they turned out to be very enthusiastic about rhyming or making up new works like: ranaavion, peznube, toxirizo, delfirena, to mention a few. The result were many songs and rhymes that later were used in music time.
After recess meditation was led by Sebas and Abraham while everyone wrote on their diaries.  They were a bit scattered but at the end the group’s energy was stabilized.
During music time there was another music battle, this time using the phrases that were written during the writing class. The kids enjoyed the exercise and it shows how the song is taking shape.
Alongside the New Media guides were interviewing the kids, after Edel and Citatli were guiding another group of kids in taking self-portraits with pin hole cameras that they made themselves. The kids always seem so interested in these activities, with the professional cameras and the home-made cameras.
To motivate them even more Sebas prepared a video in which they saw everything we had done the previous week. During theater class, once the groups were separated, we reviewed and rehearsed the sketches that came up yesterday.  Making some character and plot changes in order to work corporality and voice even deeper.
Lastly all of us did an exercise guided by Neyli, the dancer of the group, during this exercise we projected videos and textures of water and played music.  The children had to imitate the movement of water.  In the beginning it was a bit hard for them to let themselves go, but after a little bit they got into the music and the images.
The closing circle finished with a warm heart between guides and participants that for sure made up for all the energy used during the day.
See you Later!
Victoria.
